The breeding season at the captive centers has ended, well, almost.  There are still some eggs that are due to hatch over the next two weeks but artificial insemination (AI) has ended and the captive birds have finished laying eggs.  Our colleagues still have a lot of work ahead of them raising the chicks but there's always a bit of relief when the AI, egg production, and incubation slows down and ends and the focus is just on the chicks!

Currently, there are 8 chicks being raised for release in Louisiana.  Four fertile eggs have also been assigned to our project which could give us 12 birds but the total number that will ultimately make the trip later this year won't be known for a while as not all eggs hatch and sometimes young chicks don't survive.

It hasn't been the best year for captive production and everyone wishes there were more chicks available for all the reintroduction projects but we appreciate all the efforts of the captive flock managers!

Thank you also to Jane Chandler for sending along these photos of 4 of the LA chicks.

In other news the two nests in Allen Parish are still being incubated and our fingers are crossed that a chick will hatch from one or both of them in the near future!
