Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana

False River is an inactive oxbow lake formed around the early 1700's by the Mississippi River. It is an approximately 3,200 acre lake in Pointe Coupee Parish near New Roads, LA, which is about 35 miles northwest of Baton Rouge. The lake has an average depth of 21 feet, and a maximum depth of 65 feet. The lake's shoreline is highly developed with houses, camps, and businesses. The lake has a mixed usage consisting of recreational angling, hunting, water sports, and other leisure activities. Historically; sedimentation, water quality, fish diseases, and vegetation issues have influenced the diversity and abundance of fish communities in the lake. Currently, LDWF Inland Fish Division is taking steps to improve False River's habitat as well as continuously monitor fisheries stocks.
