Hatchery DesignPondsAll of the ponds at Booker Fowler Fish Hatchery are lined with a heavy plastic liner (linear low density polyethylene) and contain concrete kettles and steps. Each pond is supplied with electrical outlets and two air valves, one of which is connected to an air lift that constantly supplies air and water circulation in the pond. There are 55 one-acre, 15 one-quarter acre, and 3 one-third acre ponds.Water SupplyWater is supplied to the hatchery via 5 pumps from the 2,250 acre Indian Creek Reservoir and from 4 ground water wells. At peak production, the hatchery's water supply system can produce 12,000 gallons per minute. Surface water from Indian Creek Reservoir is filtered through drum screens before entering the hatchery. Well water is degassed and oxygenated before entering the hatchery. Water supplied to the main wet lab can be chilled and recirculated if needed. After it is no longer needed, water is drained into settling ponds, then released back into Indian Creek Reservoir.Intensive Culture FacilitiesThe hatchery is well equipped for the intensive culture of several species of fish. Inside the main wet lab, you will find 40 twenty-foot fiberglass raceways used to hatch and feed fry, an egg incubation room with 8 McDonald Hatching Jar Batteries (each capable of incubating 100,000 eggs at a time), Brine Shrimp hatching cabinets, a spawning room for injecting and holding fish to be spawned, a feed room, a walk-in freezer, and a small laboratory.Diagnostic & Chemistry LaboratoriesThe main labs are located inside the office building. The chemistry lab is used for mixing chemicals used in aquaculture and for testing water quality. The diagnostics lab is for holding, diagnosing, and treating diseased fish. |
