Women’s Fishing Workshops

Every year, LDWF partners with CCA Louisiana, the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation, the National Wildlife Federation, and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund to present two FREE Women’s Fishing Workshops at the Cabela’s in Gonzales, LA.  These workshops are open to all women over the age of 18 who are interested in learning about fishing and Louisiana’s aquatic resources.  The goal of these workshops is to give women the opportunity to become knowledgeable, confident anglers who enjoy and protect the beautiful fisheries Louisiana has to offer.

Whether fishing is your favorite past time or something you’ve never done before, these workshops have something to offer.  Beginners will take away the skills and knowledge they need to fish with confidence on their own, and more experienced anglers will be given the opportunity to sharpen their skills and maybe learn something new!  The workshops, facilitated by LDWF biologists, captains and aquatic volunteer instructors, cover a variety of topics and teach numerous skills to help make fishing more enjoyable for everyone.  Some of the topics include fish identification, best fish handling practices, preparing fishing equipment, and basic fishing skills, as well as the arts of catching, cleaning, storing, and cooking fish.

Some of the participants in each workshop will also get the chance to apply their newly learned skills on an overnight fishing trip to Grand Isle!  Accompanied by LDWF biologists and volunteer instructors, participants will have the opportunity to fish, tour and stay at the LDWF Fisheries Research Laboratory and learn about the many projects led by staff at the facility.  Participants will also tour the Oyster Hatchery and learn about the production of oyster larvae for restoration and research.

Registration for the Women’s Fishing Workshops is now closed. Selected participants wil be notified via email or phone.

“This program is amazing. I have learned far more than I expected. I came hoping to learn nuts and bolts, but I leave not only knowing some of the nuts and bolts, but more importantly, where to access more information… The teaching was superb and the enthusiasm was contagious. Thank you!!!” -Participant at the April 24, 2017 workshop
