What is hunter education? Hunter Education is one program offered by the Education Section within the Wildlife Division of the La. Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries.
The major objectives of the Hunter Education programs are: Reduce the number of hunting accidents. Improve the image of hunting through ethical and responsible conduct. Promote the shooting sports.
Who can participate? Anyone can participate in the basic student course, but only those persons 10 years of age or older are eligble for certification. This course requires classroom attendance, passing a written test with a score of 75 percent or better, and completing a live-fire exercise. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a Louisiana Hunter Education Certification Card that is recognized by all other states.
How much does the course cost? The Hunter Education and Bowhunter Educaion courses are FREE. Funding for both programs is through the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act. This Act places a federal excise tax on firearms, ammunition, and archery equipment. Each state receives an apportionment through a federal aid grant on a 75 percent federal/25 percent match.

Who is required to take the hunter education course? Act 149 of the 1984 Louisiana Legislature enacted a mandatory education requirement for anyone born on or after September 1, 1969. All young hunters must successfully complete the course prior to purchasing a hunting license.
Older hunters who plan to hunt out of state should check the state regulation where they plan to hunt. All 50 states now require some form of mandatory hunter education certification prior to issuing a license.
Who teaches hunter education courses? Courses are taught by Hunter Education staff and volunteer instructors. The majority of courses are taught by volunteers recruited from schools, law enforcement agencies, sportsmen's groups, and many other conservation-minded organizations.
Where are hunter education courses offered? More than 500 courses are taught throughout the state yearly.
