DEER PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The demand for recreational opportunities involving white-tailed deer in Louisiana is high. Region and Program biologists provide technical assistance through to hunters, hunting clubs, and landowners interested in managing this important game animal. Work activities involve management on both public and private land.  In addition, this Program coordinates the issuing of Physically Challenged Hunter Program permits and assists the Department of Agriculture with evaluation of Alternative Livestock Program applications.

The Deer Program is coordinated by two biologists, Scott Durhum, Deer Study Leader and Emile Leblance, DMAP Coordinator. The Deer Study Leader also serves on the Southeast Deer Study Group Committee, a committee which provides continuing education for biologists who work with deer and develops recommendations for wildlife agencies' Directors on a variety of deer issues. 

Objective
The objective of the Deer Program is to manage and maintain healthy population of white-tailed deer in Louisiana and to provide quality outdoor recreation and a harvest of 200,000 deer annually.
