The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission adopted several prior amendments and rejected a proposed rule to this year's hunting season and regulations notice of intent at their May 3 meeting.

The commission decided not to alter traditional waterfowl hunting hours at the Atchafalaya Delta Wildlife Management Area (WMA).  Waterfowl hunting on Atchafalaya Delta WMA will take place from one-half hour before sunrise until sunset, except for the opening weekends of teal and duck seasons when shooting hours are one-half hour before sunrise until 2 p.m.

The following are the prior amendments to the notice of intent that were added to the hunting season and regulations notice of intent:

-- A special youth deer season on private lands would allow hunters 15 years of age and younger to deer hunt with a 20-gauge shotgun using deer slugs during the muzzleloader season.

-- A gun season for farm-raised white-tailed deer would allow pen handlers to shoot deer with guns when the season opens from Oct. 31-Jan. 31.  The season would include either-sex hunting using bows, guns or muzzleloaders. According to agriculture regulations, deer harvested in pens are required to be tagged, which will help LDWF Enforcement Division agents distinguish between pen-harvested and wild white-tailed deer.

-- A clarification regarding ATV use during the spring squirrel season was added to the notice of intent.  The new language of the regulations would read "ATVs are prohibited from March 1 until August 31 EXCEPT ATV trails are open on areas with a spring squirrel season and EXCEPT certain trails may be open during this time period to provide access for fishing or other purposes and some ATV trails will be open all year long on certain WMAs."

-- A clarifying statement in the regulations concerning coyotes would read "Coyote hunting is restricted to chase only when using dogs during still hunting segments of the firearm and archery only season for deer."

The notice of intent for the upcoming hunting season will go to oversight for approval no later than May 10.  If no more changes are necessary, the final ratification will take place in June.
