Release Date: 07/10/2007

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries proposed the season dates for the 2008 Turkey Hunting Season to the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission at the commission's July 9 meeting.

The recommended statewide opening date is Friday, March 21.  The season in Area A would extend to April 20, Area B to April 13, and Area C to April 6.  The daily bag limit is one gobbler, and the season limit is two gobblers.
In most years the turkey season opens the fourth Saturday in March.  However, in 2008 the fourth Saturday falls during the Easter weekend.  The Friday opening was recommended to take advantage of the extended weekend that many hunters will have.

Special private land youth hunts and hunts for wheelchair confined hunters will take place on March 15 and 16.
The proposal also includes a requirement that all turkey hunters, regardless of age or license status, obtain tags prior to hunting turkeys.  Successful hunters will be required to tag their gobbler and report their harvest within 72 hours.  Harvest reporting can be done by telephone or internet.

The recommendation also includes:

A new youth lottery hunt on Tunica Hills WMA
A new lottery hunt on Dewey Wills WMA.
