The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Inland Fisheries Division completed a week-long herbicide spray project at Lake Bistineau on April 11 as part of a long-range plan to regain control of aquatic plants on the northwest Louisiana water body.
Seventeen LDWF spray crews were stationed at Lake Bistineau State Park between April 7 and 11. The crews covered 2,016 acres of giant salvinia, using 1,499 gallons of EPA-approved Aquamaster herbicide in that time frame, interrupted only on Thursday due to high winds which prevented spraying.
The goal of the intensified effort was to kill a significant amount of giant salvinia and restore normal use and aesthetics of the lake for residents and visitors.
Inland Fisheries will now evaluate the effectiveness of the herbicide over the next two weeks to determine proper follow-up steps.
