(May 28, 2014) – The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries’ Family Fish Fest at Campo’s Marina in Shell Beach on Saturday was a huge success, and event winners took home loads of prizes.

Launched earlier this year, Family Fish Fest events are designed to increase youth and family involvement in fishing and fisheries conservation.  Each event includes fishing opportunities with live redfish and speckled trout tagging at all saltwater locations.  The public is encouraged to bring out their entire family for what promises to be an exciting day of fishing, hands-on activities, educational exhibits and great prize giveaways.

Saturday’s event included a mobile touch tank, fish identification, knot tying lessons, cast net lessons, minnow races, casting tutorials, LDWF mascot Robbie the Redfish and arts and crafts.

Winners include Little Angler Redfish first place, Maddie Schieble; second place, Michael Schieble; Little Angler Speckled Trout first place, Rachel Riley Natal; second place, Benjamin Babin;  Junior Angler Redfish first place, Cole White; Team Wham Slam first place, Donnie Natal; Team Catch-N-Count first place, Shane Beard; Team Crab Grab first place, Kira Stevens.  Those who brought in extra live redfish and trout to be tagged by the Department as part of the Louisiana Cooperative Marine Fish Tagging Program were also entered into a raffle for additional prizes.

Our next Family Fish Fest is scheduled for June 7 at Myrtle Grove Marina in Myrtle Grove from 6 a.m. to noon.  Entry for the event is $10 per participant and includes a t-shirt and lunch.  The first 50 youth registrants will receive a complimentary rod and reel courtesy of Pure Fishing, and the first 100 youth registrants will receive a fishing goodie bag.  Youth will compete for prizes in multiple categories and are also eligible for several raffles simply by participating.  Register for this event at www.wlf.la.gov/familyfishfest.

Saturday’s sponsors included CCA Louisiana, Coca Cola Bottling Company, Pure Fishing, Coon Neck Wildlife and Art Gallery, Dufrene Building Materials, Faux Pas Prints, Home Depot, Marsh and Bayou Outfitters and Emprint Moran Printing.

LDWF Family Fish Fest is hosted in conjunction with the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation.  The LWFF was formed to provide a means for individuals and corporations to become partners with the Department and Commission in the challenge of conserving Louisiana’s wildlife and fisheries resources.
