The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries awarded four of the Wildlife Division's Region 7 staff with a plaque at the April Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission meeting for banding their 500th gobbler.
Those honored were the Area Supervisor Tommy Bruhl of Folsom, and Wildlife Technicians Bruce Knight and Calvin Waskom, and Biologist Supervisor Jimmy Stafford all of Franklinton. Their efforts for banding turkeys will help the department estimate gobbler harvest rates more accurately for years to come. Stafford initiated this research project on the Bens Creek Wildlife Management Area in 1989.
LDWF is also advising turkey hunters that they may encounter banded gobblers in the northwest and north central parts of Louisiana and ask any hunter who harvests a banded tom to report it by calling the phone number on the band at 225-765-2350.
