March 28, 2012-- The 2012 National Archery in the Schools State Tournament, held March 17-18 at Louisiana College in Alexandria, featured students from seven competing schools.
Year five of the annual competition involved 278 students participating in the elementary, middle and high school divisions. This year’s top competitors included:

The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) promotes international-style target archery as part of the physical education curriculum in grades 4-12. The curriculum covers archery history, safety, technique, equipment, mental concentration, core strengthening physical fitness and self improvement.
Teachers attend an eight-hour Basic Archery Instructor (BAI) training program conducted by Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries’ education staff to learn to teach the two week, in-school curriculum.
Students use standardized equipment to shoot at targets placed before an arrow curtain in the school gymnasium.
Participating schools in this year’s tournament included Ball Elementary and Middle Schools, Benton Elementary and Middle Schools, C.E. Byrd High School, Caddo Magnet, Hayden R. Lawrence Elementary, Phoenix Elementary and Middle Schools and Poland Elementary and Middle Schools.
