A common nuisance behavior associated with Louisiana black bears is related to pet food and feeders for birds and other animals. As demonstrated with the LDWF black bear garbage information, bears will take advantage of readily available food sources, even if it is only a small amount. Remember, once a bear finds food, it WILL come back! The following tips can help prevent bears from becoming nuisance yard bears:
- REMOVE ALL BIRD AND SQUIRREL FEEDERS FROM YOUR YARD. IF YOU CHOOSE TO HAVE WILDLIFE AND BIRD FEEDERS, MAKE SURE THEY ARE HUNG AT LEAST 10 FEET IN THE AIR.
- NEVER PUT “FOOD SCRAPS” OUT FOR WILDLIFE
- FEED PETS DURNING THE DAY-NEVER LEAVE PET FOOD OUTDOORS AT NIGHT
- PLANT AND BUILD WILDLIFE ATTRACTANTS IN YOUR YARD THAT ARE LESS DESIRABLE TO BEARS, BUT STILL ALLOW YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENJOY MULTIPLE SPECIES OF WILDLIFE (SEE FLYERS BELOW).
However, sometimes despite your best efforts, where there is a will, there is a way!
