Shooting Ranges

Beginning June 1, 2022, visitors must have a WMA Access Permit, Senior Hunting/Fishing License, Louisiana Sportsman's Paradise License, or a Lifetime Hunting/Fishing License to visit an LDWF WMA, Refuge, or Conservation Area, including Shooting Ranges, for any reason—boating, hiking, bird watching, berry picking, fishing, hunting, shooting, etc. except, Honey Island Shooting Range users must check with range personnel upon entry into the range. The WMA Access Permit only covers access onto the property—it does NOT convey hunting or fishing privileges. Beginning July 1, 2022, all visitors must also comply with self-clearing permit guidelines.

Description:

100 and 200-yard rifle range, a 25-yard pistol range, and a shotgun range with three automatic clay target throwers.  Shotgun shooters are required to bring their own clay targets.  Target frames and paper targets are provided.    

Rules

  1. All users must abide by range officer directions (if present).
  2. Eye and ear protection required.
  3. Firearms must be uncased, magazines removed, and actions open when carried onto range.
  4. Keep all muzzles pointed in a safe direction.
  5. No handling of firearms when users are down range.
  6. Shooters may have only one firearm on the firing line at a time.
  7. All firearms must be unloaded with the actions open unless on the firing line and the range is cleared for live fire.
  8. During a cease fire, all firearms must be properly racked behind the shooting line, completely unloaded, with the action open.
  9. No rapid fire or fully automatic fire.
  10. Firearms may not be drawn and fired from holsters.
  11. Only paper targets and provided target frames may be used. No metal or exploding targets.
  12. No tracer or armor piercing rounds allowed.
  13. Must use the provided launchers to shoot clay targets.
  14. No alcoholic beverages allowed.
  15. No profane language or derogatory remarks.
  16. No pets allowed.
  17. Shooters must pick up their own shell hulls, casings, and trash and dispose of it properly.

Description:

Shooting opportunities include a rifle range, rim-fire and pistol range, shotgun range with electronic throwers, and a 3-D archery range. Southeast Louisiana Firearm Safety Incorporated is a nonprofit volunteer organization which handles the day-to-day operations and upkeep of the range using all volunteer staff. The organization uses money generated from range fees for range maintenance, improvements, and operations.

Bodcau Archery Range

The archery range on the Bodcau WMA is open 7 days a week. The WMA is open from 4 a.m. until 2 hours after sunset.

Description:

There is a practice range when you first begin on the trail. The walking trail makes a complete circle and has 10 stations with 20 different 3-D targets set at various distances. At certain times, a few 3-D targets may be removed to use at other special events we host. 

Firearms are prohibited on the archery range. Field points ONLY; no broad-heads are allowed. Please do not move targets. 

There is no range officer on the archery range. Please be safe and only shoot in the direction of the set targets.

Rules

Archery Range:

  • Field points only.
  • All elevated stand users must have Treestand Manufacturers Association-certified safety harness.
  • No users will be allowed on the 3-D archery range when the skeet range is in use.
  • Groups must call in advance to ensure the 3-D range is available for use.

Air Rifle Range:

  • Eye protection is required.
  • No air guns with muzzle velocities over 1,200 feet per second are allowed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the archery range to sight in my bow/crossbow?
Absolutely! The range is available for public use. Please note that only field points are allowed on our range. We provide both range and 3-D targets, and there is an elevated shooting platform for practicing. Note that all users who use the platform are required to wear a fall-arrest harness, which is not provided.

Are the archery trails open to the public?
Yes, there are 3-D targets along the archery trails for public use. The trails are open weekdays and Saturdays, unless there is an archery tournament.  Contact Kacie Rome at krome@wlf.la.gov or 225.274.8192 for the tournament schedule.

Does the facility provide bows/arrows?
No. The archery range has targets for public use, but you must provide any other equipment.

Is the air rifle range open to the public?
Yes. Any individual or small group can use the range, provided that they follow all posted range safety rules. Air rifles exceeding 1200 fps are prohibited.

Can the public use the shotgun range?
Currently, the shotgun range is only available for Hunter Education classes and special events. Private groups cannot reserve the range.

Rules

Self-Clearing Permit:
You must have a Self-Clearing Permit for all activities on wildlife management areas, unless otherwise specified. This includes the use of any shooting range. Self-Clearing Permits are available at Information/Permit Stations located on the Range Complex. You must fill out the Self-Clearing Permit before entering the range area.

Licenses:
If you're using any LDWF-administered land, including WMAs, refuges, and conservation areas, for any activity, you must have a WMA Access Permit. Individuals age 17 and under are not required to purchase a WMA Access Permit. WMA Access Permits are included with the Louisiana Sportsman’s Paradise License, Senior Hunting/Fishing License, and Lifetime Licenses.one of the following.

Though these courses are not required, they are designed to be easy to understand and user-friendly.
