The Wildlife and Fisheries Commission passed a Notice of Intent (NOI) to establish recreational and commercial passive fishing gear marking, setting, and tending requirements for using saltwater yo-yos, trigger devices, trotlines, limb lines, jugs, and all other passive fishing devices containing a hook or hooks.

Today’s action will provide uniformity, where possible, between freshwater and saltwater passive gear rules and reduce the potential for litter/abandoned gear by increasing accountability to gear via proof of ownership.

Below is a summary of the existing and proposed saltwater passive hooked gear requirements:

Interested persons may submit comments relative to the proposed rule to Jason Adriance, Fisheries Division, Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, P.O. Box 98000, Baton Rouge, LA 70898-9000 or via email to jadriance@wlf.la.gov through July 31, 2024.
