Description

Small dabbling duck. Males dark spotted light brown flanks & chest, orange feet black bill, grayish head with white cresecent often visible anterior to eye. Females generally mottled brown with dark bill. Both sexes display large bright blue patch on proximal-dorsal surface of wing while in flight.

Sound

Males: high pitched whistle "tsee". Females: quack and chuckle

Range and Habitat

 Prairie pothole/parkland region of Canada through northern South America.

Behavior

 Early fall migrant (September). Least tolerant of cold weather.

Population Status

 Abundant, stable

Hunting License Information

 Basic hunting license or equivalent combination license (Sportsman Paradise). Waterfowl, HIP certification (18 years old and older). Federal Duck Stamp (16 years old and older) signed across the face, if hunting WMA then WMA Access Permit.
