LDWF and partners sponsor several contests to encourage youth to participate in Louisiana's incredible outdoor opportunities.
Youth Angler of the Year Award
The Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association and Coastal Conservation Association of Louisiana established the Youth Angler of the Year Award for high school youth to encourage their participation in fishing, helping to keep this longstanding outdoor tradition alive in the Bayou State. This award also encourages aspiring outdoor journalists by requiring youth to write a story about and take photos of their fishing trips. Young fishing enthusiasts are encouraged to carry a notepad, pen, and camera (or their smartphones) to take notes and photographs during their fishing trips.
One male and one female Youth Angler of the Year are selected each year based on the stories they submit. Youth may only enter and win one time. All entrants must be Louisiana residents.
Youth Journalism Contest
The Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association's annual Youth Journalism Contest is designed to stimulate an interest in outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, boating, camping, and hiking, as well as the ability to communicate this interest to the public through essays and photography. The Louisiana Chapter of Safari Club International and LDWF also sponsor this contest.
All youths, age 18 and under, may submit entries (essays and photos) to the Louisana Outdoor Writers Association from the beginning of each fall hunting season through May.
