A medium-large snake - 16 to 50 inches long. Gray, orange, or tan above with dark gray, reddish brow,n or brown crossbands that may be offset between the back and sides. Underside is pale with small, dark, crescent-shaped markings. Head is unmarked. Scales are keeled (ridged) in 21 to 23 rows.
Range and Habitat
Found in the upland portions of the Florida Parishes. Inhabit sand-bottomed streams and rivers in wooded areas.
Behavior
Feed primarily on fish and the occasional frog and tadpole. Give birth to 6 to 40 young.
Population Status
Ranked as S4 (apparently secure) in Louisiana.
