Visiting LDWF's Public Lands - Engaging in Non-Consumptive Activities On LDWF’s Public Lands
What To Know Before You Geaux
Louisiana’s Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), refuges, and conservation areas offer incredible opportunities to explore the outdoors and partake in non-consumptive activities, from hiking and birdwatching to camping and berry-picking. These public lands are here for you to enjoy, but it’s important to follow a few steps to ensure a safe and legal visit. Before heading out, make sure you have the necessary permits and stay informed about regulations. By doing so, you’ll help protect our natural resources while making the most of your time in the wild.
Follow These Steps To Access Wildlife Management Areas, Refuges, and Conservation Areas Safely & Legally
1. Obtain a WMA Access Permit (only for individuals 18 years or older)
Cost: Annual permit is $20 for both residents and nonresidents; 5-day permit good for 5 consecutive days and is $5 for both residents and nonresidents
Anyone 18 or older* must have a WMA Access Permit to enter WMAs, refuges, or conservation areas.
If you have a Louisiana Sportsman’s Paradise License, Senior Hunting/Fishing License, or Lifetime License, the WMA Access Permit is included, so no separate purchase is needed.
*There are some exemptions to this regulation. Please check the WMA Access Permit page for these exemptions.
2. Complete a Self-Clearing Permit
Cost: Free
A Self-Clearing Permit is required for ALL ACTIVITIES on WMAs, refuges, and conservation areas. The permit consists of two portions: check-in and check-out.
All visitors must obtain a Self-Clearing Permit before entering a Wildlife Management Area. There are three ways to do this:
- Paper Permit – Available at on-site Self-Clearing Permit Stations. Complete the check-in portion and place it in the permit box before starting your activity. Keep the check-out portion with you and submit it in the box when leaving.
- LDWF Check-In/Check-Out App – Download from Apple or Download from Google Play to check in and out electronically.
- LDWF Check in / Check out Web Portal – Use the online system to check in and out conveniently.
If using a Self-Clearing Permit Station, you may check in one day in advance, but you must check out immediately upon leaving.
3. Be Aware of Other Activities and Seasons
You’re welcome to visit LDWF-managed properties year-round, but please stay aware of other WMA activities (like hunting) that may be happening on the property during your visit. Find WMA and refuge information and maps and LDWF seasons and regulations online or at any LDWF field office.
Additional information regarding regulations and seasons can be obtained by contacting the appropriate field office that administers the area you are interested in or plan to visit.

Individuals age 17 and under are not required to have a WMA Camping Permit.
The WMA Camping Permit(s) or LDWF number(s) must be displayed at each camping party's campsite.

Are You Hunting, Fishing, or Trapping?
Louisiana’s Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), refuges, and conservation areas offer incredible opportunities to explore the outdoors and partake in a variety of consumptive activities like hunting, fishing, and trapping. These public lands provide prime habitats for pursuing game, catching fish, and practicing traditional outdoor skills. Before heading out, make sure you have the necessary licenses and permits and stay informed about regulations to promote safe and ethical practices. By doing so, you’ll help conserve our natural resources while enjoying the rich outdoor heritage Louisiana has to offer.
