A medium snake- 15-45 inches long. Sides are tan to dark brown with rows of black spots that may make the upper sides appear black. Some have red markings or a distinct checkerboard pattern on the sides. Usually have a prominent white, yellow, or orange stripe down the back and a pale stripe on each side on the 2nd and 3rd scale rows above the ventral plates. Underside is dull white or pale tan to pale green with a row of black dots on each side. Scales are keeled (ridged) and in 19 rows.

Range and Habitat

Found in most habitats in Louisiana but known from very few localities west of the Red River and Atchafalaya Basin. Absent from much of west Louisiana and coastal marshes.

Behavior

When agitated, they will often flatten their heads into a diamond shape and spread their bodies to show the pattern of spots. Feed primarily on earthworms and secondarily on frogs and toads. They give birth to 9 to 38 young.

Population Status

Populations are considered stable within the state.
