Scarlet Snake

Scientific Name: Cemophora coccinea

Terrestrial

Native

Nonvenomous

Adults are 13 to 25 inches long. Pale gray/white with around 15 to 28 with red saddles bordered on either side by black crossbands along back. white below. Snout is red and pointed. Scales are smooth.

Range and Habitat

Found in pine or mixed woods or relatively open pine-hardwood forests

Behavior

Remain concealed in burrows by day and venture out at night. Not known to bite. Feed on eggs reptiles. Females lay 2 to 11 (usually 4 to 7) eggs.

Population Status

Trapping efforts suggest that populations are stable.
