Cuban Bulrush
Sedge
-
Scientific Name:
Oxycaryum cubense Aquatic
Non-native
Description
A leafy sedge with a single triangular stem growing up to 3 feet tall. Multiple round seed heads grow from short stalks that originate from the top of the stem. Slender leaves form at the base of the stem and extend above the water surface. Grows in mass free-floating mats or islands called tussocks.
Range and Habitat
Native to South America and the West Indies. Introduced in Louisiana in the mid-20th century.
Behavior
Individual plants send out runners that connect with roots/rhizomes of other aquatic plants. As individuals amass, they capture sediment from the water column in the root/rhizome network. Once enough is collected, the species is capable of surviving independently of other structures as a floating mat (tussock).
