Description
A diving duck of medium size. The head, neck, tail, back, and upper breast are dark. The lower breast and belly are white with pale gray sides. The male head has a weak tuft with a purplish color. Females are more brown than dark when compared to the male. Cinnamon neck ring, white eye ring, blue-gray bill with white ring and black tip.
Sound
A faint, wheezy whistle "deeeeeer" from males. Females will make a harsh quack when disturbed.
Range and Habitat
Breeds in southern Canada and northern U.S. from California to Maine. Winters nationwide. Found in woody lakes, ponds, and rivers. Not typically found on saltwater except along the Gulf Coast occassionaly.
Behavior
Recognized by its extremely rapid wingbeat and direct flight. Typically found in small groups of the same species. Will socialize with other species on wintering grounds. Dives and dabbles for aquatic vegetation, seeds, and invertebrates.

Basic hunting license or equivalent combination license (Sportsman Paradise). Waterfowl, HIP certification (18 years old and older). Federal Duck Stamp (16 years old and older) signed across the face, if hunting WMA then WMA Access Permit.
