Description

An emergent perennial grass with smooth, straight stems growing from 1 to 7 feet tall. Found in dense stands throughout the marsh. Green during spring and summer, turning light brown during fall and winter. Its long, thin leaves often bend toward the tips. Flowers in spring and summer. Flowering plants resemble wheat plants with 4 to 12-inch spikes. Grows in three, genetically identical forms. The tallest form is found along the along the water and the shortest form is found away from the water in the high marsh. 

Range and Habitat

Native in the North America along the East Coast from Quebec through the Gulf of America. Introduced along the U.S. West Coast. Found in tidal salt marshes.

Behavior

Propagates through rhizomes and seeds. Spreads extensively through rhizomes but also effective seedlings. A highly adaptable species, tolerating a wide range of pH, oxygen, and salinity levels. Provides significant erosion protection to shorelines, canal banks, and other areas of coastal wetland loss.
