Description
A diving duck of medium size. Gray back and sides, black chest and rump/tail, white belly. Brown, gray wings, blue bill with black nails, and yellow eyes.
Sound
A low, trilling "kurr-kurr" or "rrrrr" in quick succession.
Range and Habitat
Breeds in southern Canada and northern U.S. from California to Maine. Winters nationwide. They are found in woody lakes, ponds, and rivers. It is not typically found on saltwater except occasionally along the Gulf Coast.
Behavior
Recognized by its extremely rapid wingbeat and direct flight. Typically found in small groups of the same species. Will socialize with other species on wintering grounds. Dives and dabbles for aquatic vegetation, seeds, and invertebrates.

Basic hunting license or equivalent combination license (Sportsman Paradise). Waterfowl, HIP certification (18 years old and older). Federal Duck Stamp (16 years old and older) signed across the face, if hunting WMA then WMA Access Permit.
