Range and Habitat

Found beneath rocks, logs, and leaves in moist hardwood forest bordering rocky streams in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina, and Louisiana. Only found east of the Mississippi River.

Population Status

Ranked S1 (critically imperiled) in Louisiana. Threats to population include habitat destruction from conversion of hardwood forest to pine plantations. Rare in Louisiana—population covers less than 10 acres. Declines in salamander populations are early indicators of habitat quality and degradation.
