Rainbow Trout in Louisiana? Yes, you read that right! This January, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) will stock community ponds across the state with adult-size Rainbow Trout. Don’t have a boat? No problem. These sites are designed specifically for bank fishing, making it easy to grab your gear and enjoy a fun day of fishing with family and friends—right in your own community.

This is the only time of year Rainbow Trout are stocked at these locations, so don’t miss this rare opportunity to catch a fish you don’t land every day in the Bayou State.

While Rainbow Trout are native to rivers and lakes of western North America, their popularity as a sport fish has led to stocking programs across the country. LDWF stocks this cold-water species during the winter months when water temperatures are cool enough for them to thrive. Anglers are encouraged to keep their catch, as the trout are meant to be harvested before temperatures begin to rise.

But, where can you find these Rainbow Trout?

Anglers 18 and older must possess a valid Louisiana fishing license when fishing in public waters. Licenses can be purchased online. By purchasing a fishing license, Louisiana receives matching funds from the Sport Fish Restoration Program, which supports public fishing and boating access, fishing programs, education, and fisheries management.
