Rising flood waters in the Atchafalaya Basin triggered an automatic deer hunting season closure Saturday in parts of Deer Area 9.

As the flood gauge at Butte La Rose reached 18 feet Saturday, the High Water Benchmark Closure, enacted by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission in Title 76, has closed deer hunting in an area of the Atchafalaya Basin in portions of Iberia, Iberville, St. Martin and St. Mary parishes.

The area encompasses those parishes south of I-10, west and east of the Atchafalaya Basin Protection Levee and north of U.S. 90.

The closure will remain in effect until the flood gauge goes below the 18-foot mark as mandated.
