LDWF Joint Patrols with NOAA Result in Eight Subjects Cited in Gulf of America

- Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) enforcement agents conducted two Joint Enforcement Agreement patrols with NOAA Fisheries’ Office of Law Enforcement in the Gulf of America on May 15 that resulted in eight subjects being cited for alleged fishing violations.

LDWF agents and a NOAA OLE Officer cited the following:

An individual from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, cited federally for violating federal shrimping regulations. Agents on patrol in the Gulf of America first boarded a shrimp vessel for a gear and license inspection. Agents learned the captain did not possess the required federal shrimp permit to fish for shrimp in federal waters.

An individual from Denham Springs, Louisiana, cited federally for not possessing a highly migratory species (HMS) permit. Agents made contact with the angler aboard a recreational fishing vessel. Agents found that he caught and possessed a shark without possessing an HMS permit.

An individual from Saucier, Mississippi, cited federally for violating federal reef fish regulations. Agents made contact with an angler aboard a recreational fishing vessel. Agents found him in possession of eight Red Snapper, which is double the legal possession limit of four.

An individual from Houma, Louisiana, cited federally for possessing an Amberjack during a closed season. Agents made contact with an angler on board a recreational fishing vessel. Agents found him in possession of a Greater Amberjack.

An individual from River Ridge, Louisiana, cited federally for violating federal reef fish regulations. Agents made contact with an angler on board a recreational fishing vessel. Agents found him in possession of one Red Snapper over the legal possession limit.

Todd Morris, 57, of Franklin, Louisiana, for fishing without recreational basic and saltwater fishing licenses. Agents made contact with Morris on board a recreational fishing vessel. Agents found that Morris was in possession of four Red Snapper without possessing his recreational basic and saltwater fishing licenses.

An individual from Larose, Louisiana, cited federally for possessing Amberjack during a closed season, possessing an undersized Amberjack and using reef fish as bait. Agents made contact with the captain on board a commercial fishing vessel actively engaged in fishing. Agents found him in possession of an undersized Amberjack that he also cut up to use as bait.

All federal charges are referred to NOAA OLE to assess appropriate civil penalties.

Failing to possess basic and saltwater fishing licenses bring up to a $350 fine for each offense.
