Last night, Dec. 3, the jury in the trial involving the shooter that shot a Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) enforcement agent in the line of duty came back with an attempted first degree murder conviction.
Sgt. Scott Bullitt, 32, of Jonesboro, was shot while on patrol on the Russell Sage Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Ouachita Parish on May 21 by Luke Jarrod Hust, 29, of Monroe.
The jury at the Fourth Judicial District Courthouse convicted Hust on two counts of attempted first degree murder and one count of illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Hust will be sentenced on Feb. 11. District Attorney Jerry Jones was the lead prosecutor for the state.
“We are very pleased that Sgt. Bullitt’s shooter received the justice he deserved and want to thank everybody who had a hand in getting these convictions,” said Col. Joey Broussard, head of the LDWF Enforcement Division.
Around 6:40 p.m. on May 21 Sgt. Bullitt along with another agent stopped a vehicle at the end of Buckley Hill Road near the Wham Break Boat Launch on the Russell Sage WMA. During the stop, Hust shot Sgt. Bullitt and fled the scene into the woods.
Sgt. Bullitt was rushed to a Monroe hospital and stabilized. Hust was captured around 11 p.m.
Sgt. Bullitt was then taken to Shreveport where he successfully underwent surgery to remove the bullet and bone fragments on May 26. Sgt. Bullitt is still rehabbing from his injuries and not yet returned to regular duty as a LDWF agent.
Sgt. Bullitt has been an LDWF agent for over five years.
