Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited a subject for alleged oyster fishing violations on Feb. 3 in Terrebonne Parish.

Agents cited Angel Torres, 47, of Houma, for taking oysters during a closed season from state grounds, violating logbook requirements, taking oysters during illegal hours, improper vessel running lights, and failing to possess a commercial fishing license.

Agents were on patrol in the Sister (Caillou) Lake Oyster Seed Reservation around 4:45 a.m. when they used an aerial drone to observe a vessel actively harvesting oysters. The oyster season for this area closed on Dec. 29.

Agents made contact with Torres and found him in possession of 900 pounds of oysters. Agents seized the oysters and returned them to the water. Agents also seized the oyster scraper used to harvest the oysters.

Taking oysters during a closed season from state grounds brings a $900 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. Taking oysters during illegal hours carries a $400 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. Failing to possess a commercial fishing license brings a $250 to $500 fine. Violating logbook requirements brings up to a $25 fine and 10 days in jail. Having improper running lights carries up to a $50 fine.
