Description
A medium snake- 15 to 45 inches long. Gray or olive above, yellow to pale gray or tan on the belly and lowermost three rows of scales. Pale tan band may be present down the back. Underside often has a central row of gray or black spots, with a dark line on either side of the belly. Scales are keeled (ridged) in 19 rows.
Range and Habitat
Found in and around marshes, swamps, and bayous in low, open areas of the state in the Mississippi - Atchafalaya basins, Acadiana, and the Red and Ouachita river bottoms.
Behavior
Mostly active during the night, spending much of their time in crawfish burrows during the day. Feed almost exclusively on crawfish. Give birth to 4 to 39 young.
Population Status
Populations are considered stable within the state.
