Description
Medium-sized bat with tawny to dark brown fur. Wingspan of 9 to 10 inches. Has long ears compared to similar species.
Range and Habitat
Range includes most of the eastern and central United States. Can be found from Canada south to Louisiana and from South Dakota east to North Carolina. Roost in dead trees with bark and caves.
Behavior
Feeds predominately on flying insects such as moths, flies, and beetles. Breed during the summer. Females have delayed fertilization and have pups in the spring.
Population Status
Ranked as S1 (endangered) in Louisiana. Threats to population include habitat loss and degradation and disease.
