Saltmarsh Snake

Description

A medium snake - 15 to 35 inches long. Pale gray or tan above with three broad, dark brown, or black longitudinal stripes and a dark band through the eye. The underside is dark reddish brown with a central row of pale spots. Scales are keeled (ridged) and in 21 rows.

Range and Habitat

Occur along the coast in open brackish and salt marshes, including the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain.

Behavior

May be seen swimming, basking on vegetation, or foraging in marshes. Feed primarily on fish and the occasional crab. Give birth to 3 to 19 young.

Population Status

Ranked as S3/S4 (rare/apparently secure) in Louisiana.
