Description
A large constricting snake- 16 to 60 inches long. Shiny black above. Each scale has a white or yellow spot. Underside is cream or yellow with alternating black blotches. In young snakes, the yellow spots may be limited to the sides and to narrow bars across the back. Scales are smooth and in 21 to 23 rows.
Range and Habitat
Common in woodlands and semi-open habitats, including marshes and vacant lots, throughout Louisiana west of the Mississippi and Atchafalaya River floodplains.
Behavior
Often discovered on the ground where they forage for other snakes, rodents, lizards, and turtle eggs. Not known to coil up and strike but often bite when handled. Lay 5 to 23 eggs.
Population Status
Potential declining populations though still regularly observed.
