LWFC Adopts Resolution Urging Department of Interior to Protect Easements in Prairie Pothole Region

Baton Rouge, Aug 10, 2026 - The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) approved a resolution asking the U.S. Department of Interior (DOI) to protect easements in the Prairie Pothole Region of the U.S. to preserve waterfowl breeding areas. The action came Thursday (Aug. 6) during the commission’s monthly meeting in Baton Rouge.

The resolution, in part, asked the DOI and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service “to retain the no-drainage standard and the setback-calculation framework.’’

The Prairie Pothole Region of the U.S. includes Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, North and South Dakota and produces approximately 50-75 percent of the primary species of ducks in North America. It also provides habitat for more than 60 percent of the breeding population.
