Description

Perennial, woody tree with alternate, rhomboid/diamond shaped leaves. When leaves are pulled from the plant, they often exude a milky sap, which is sometimes toxic to animals. Leaves are decidous in the fall. Following the flowering season (May through June), the tree produces a fruit that is a three-lobed capsule that contains one white seed in each lobe giving it a "popcorn" appearance. Seeds of this species are spread primarily by birds and water. New seedlings are often observed along fence rows and other areas where birds perch. 

Range and Habitat

This species has been increasing its range and is found throughout the southeastern United States. It is reported to occur as far west as California and as far north as Wisconsin. It can readily invade a variety of natural habitats including bottomland hardwood forest and wet coastal prairies. In addtion, it is frequently an early succesional invader of recently disturbed habitats.

Population Status

Populations appear to be increasing across its range.
