Agents Cite Two Men for Illegal Deer Hunting in Tensas Parish

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited two subjects for alleged deer hunting violations on Dec. 9 in Tensas Parish.

Agents cited Joshua Gambill, 40, of Preston, Miss., and Dakota Bass, 26, of Milton, Florida, for hunting deer during illegal hours and hunting from a moving vehicle.  Gambill was also cited for discharging a firearm from a levee road.

Agents received a tip around 8 p.m. on Dec. 9 about hearing a gunshot coming from a vehicle that was stopped on top of the Mississippi River Levee at Somerset.  The tip included a description of the truck and the location of the camp the truck drove to after leaving the levee.

Agents arrived at the camp near the Palmyra boat landing around 8:30 and found Gambill and Bass cleaning a freshly harvested deer.  The men admitted to killing the deer illegally at night from a moving vehicle and levee road with Gambill shooting the rifle and Bass driving the vehicle.

Agents seized the six-point deer and a .17 caliber rifle.

Hunting deer during illegal hours brings a $900 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail.  Hunting from a moving vehicle carries a $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail.  Discharging a firearm from a levee road brings up to a $50 fine and 30 days in jail.

The men may also face civil restitution totaling $1,624 for the replacement value of the illegally taken deer.
