Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited two Morgan City men for alleged night hunting violations on Dec. 13 in Assumption Parish.
Agents cited John Maynard, 18, and Dylan Giroir, 22, for two counts each of hunting deer during illegal hours with artificial light, hunting from a public roadway and spotlighting from a public roadway.
Around 11 p.m. on Dec. 12 agents observed two men on Hwy. 1011 near the intersection of Hwy. 400 spotlighting deer and firing four shots at a deer from the roadway.
Agents made contact with Giroir and Maynard and cited them for hunting deer during illegal hours, hunting deer from a public roadway and spotlighting from a public roadway. Agents seized a .22 caliber rifle, 9 mm pistol and 12-gauge shotgun.
On the morning of Dec. 13, agents received a complaint in Assumption Parish about a deceased deer that was found shot about 80 yards from a nearby camp on Hwy. 400. The complainant said he heard three shots the previous night about 7 p.m. from the nearby camp, which is located about four miles from the previous night’s case.
Agents arrived at the suspected camp and observed the same vehicle that was used in the night hunting case they made the night before. Agents knocked on the door of the camp and Maynard and Giroir opened.
Maynard and Giroir admitted to shooting the deer at approximately 7 p.m. The subjects also admitted to shooting the deer with the same .22 caliber rifle that was used to shoot the deer at 11 p.m.
Agents cited the men with another count of hunting deer during illegal hours, hunting from a public roadway and spotlighting from a public roadway.
Agents involved in the case are Sgt. Winston Michel, Senior Agent Joey Thompson and Agent William Carpenter.
Hunting deer during illegal hours brings a $900 to $950 fine and up to six months in jail. Hunting from a public roadway carries a $100 to $350 fine and up to 60 days in jail. Punishment for spotlighting from a public roadway is set by the parishes. The men could also face civil restitution for the illegally taken deer totaling $1,624.
