Description
A large frog that is olive green to medium brown or black; often mottled in color. Unlike similar species, there is no dorsolateral fold (ridge of raised skin) present along side of body. About 3 to 7 inches in length from snout to cloaca, with some reaching close to 9 inches.
Range and Habitat
Can be found in nearly any permanent aquatic habitat throughout the United States. Absent in brackish and saltwater habitat.
Behavior
Breed from March to August. Females can lay up to 43,000 eggs in numerous masses deposited in shallow water. Adults are opportunisitc feeders that will consume anything that can fit in their large mouths.
