Description

A submerged marine grass with thin, flat leaves. Resembles terrestrial grass. Green to reddish brown in color. Leaves can grow up to 7 inches in height. 

Range and Habitat

Native along the southeastern coast of the United States, Gulf of America, and Caribbean. Found in coastal intertidal zones in sandy and muddy substrate. Often found in shallow Gulf waters. Can tolerate a wide range of salinities and prolonged exposure to air in the upper intertidal zones. 

Behavior

Capable of reproducing through rhizomes and seeds, but flowering is rare so it primarily spreads through rhizome elongation.

Ranked S1/S2 (imperiled) in Louisiana.
